Set during the winter of 1858 that follows into the spring of 1859, Tarantino’s first western stars Jamie Foxx as Django — an African-American slave whose wife was separated from him during black slave auction. He is enlisted by Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter who takes him under his wing to assist him in his line work. In exchange, Django is granted his freedom subsequently.
The two work with each other through two seasons and Django transitions into a socially-competent gunslinger. After which time, Schultz decides to help Django on a mission across the racist South in search of his protege’s spouse.
QT nails the revenge flick in style, capturing the milieu in a way only HE can. Christoph Waltz is superb as the neurotic bounty hunter, sweeping up a consecutive Oscar under Quentin (the second of his career.) Leonardo DiCaprio is introduced about an hour into the film as Calvin Candie, a ruthless Mississippi plantation owner who looks down upon people lower than him in the food chain. He embodies the role with a touch of charm, that made me despise but admire. A Golden Globe nomination followed; Samuel L. Jackson joins him as uncle tom, Stephen: the head house slave who finds gratification out of seeing his own people suffer and tending to the every need of Calvin, marking another entertaining performance under frequent collaborator QT.
The technical aspects of the film hold its merits. The soundtrack is great, with tremendous songs from John Legend and Rick Ross; the cinematography is grand; the script is addled with masterful dialogue that is the perfect foil for the genre it depicts.
VERDICT — A slick, extremely satisfying spaghetti western that examines the treatment of black slaves during the most prejudiced time in American history. It could’ve benefited even more from a less comical ending; However, Django is a blast and a must-see for any Quentin Tarantino-head.
RATING: 8.6 — EXCELLENT
MVP: Academy Award Winner Christoph Waltz, who portrays a second successful Tarantino character with panache and an uncompromising persona.
